And so it goes...

You know how 'they' say life works in strange ways...? Well, I've got one for ya.

Today I go to work and get pulled into the Director's office with the other two new hires. Not worried, just figuring we were going to get an update of sorts. Did we ever. Our Director is leaving at the end of the month. And where is she going, you ask? (Maybe you didn't ask, but come on, play along.) Alright, I'll tell you.

She's going to fucking Allegheny General Hospital!!! Where they had the leeches. The first place I interviewed and turned them down! Well fuck me running.... this is just a bit odd. And slightly awkward...

She said she was not above 'recruiting' techs if it would work well. That's when I told her that I had interviewed there and she had asked what happened. I told her that I turned them down to work for her here. I swear I never meant for it to affect her like that, but she just looked so guilty and apologetic. I was simply seeing the irony. Oops.

We will have a new director soon, as in any situation, they could be nice or they could make Atilla the Hun look cheery. I have to ask if my hours/shift will be secure and if the offer to apply for the night head tech is still available. And will that hold true once the new director arrives. Remember, I moved out of state for this... I think I could use some sort of reassurance.

I'm not even going to play here, yes I care about my coworkers but I care about me more damn it. I'm trying to get things calm then this happens and I once again feel on shaky ground. This is not about me, it's about my Director make a change for the better in her life. And while I wish her all the best (she is truly a sweetheart) I need to know how this will effect me. With the episode at hand, I'm not in the mood to mince words and just wait it out. Either tomorrow or Friday I'll be asking her my questions. I'll just tell her that I need reassurance of the written kind in my file.

Part of me is seeing a bit of humor in this. Maybe not so much humor as nervous laughter attached to a potential time bomb. I'm not going to walk in swinging... that wouldn't get me anywhere and it's not how it deserves to be approached. This is her good news and I'm truly happy for her. I just refuse to bend over and grab my ankles in the process.

Does my approach make sense?

Don't know if it does as I've no idea how it works there, but putting yourself first in the work place seems like a good strategy ("as long as you don't extend it to walking over/on people's heads", in a droning tone). Does that make sense back?
And I don't see why she wouldn't oblige.

I think your approach makes perfect sense and if your director is any type of good person she well she it that way too. You're not trying to make waves, you just want some sort of reassurance after moving there that what you've been promised will still be true. I think it's the most professional way to handle the situation and I think it should work out for the best for you. Good luck.

It absolutely makes sense and I don't think anyone with half a brain would think otherwise so don't fuss yourself about it too much. Just ask.
Tell her to send your regards to the leeches, while you're at it lol!

ps I love your description of your neighbourhood in your last comment... 'thuglets' hahaha!
I bet you'd scare the crap out of them in no time if you wanted to... a-la stupid-street-vendor-at-Christmas, lol!

"Fuck me running"....never heard that one before! I'm using that one, you can just bet I am.

I think, after all you've been thru to get where you are, you're doing the right thing. It's not a personal relationship, it's a business thing, know what I mean?

Gotta cover your ass and take care of yourself.

Well fingers crossed the new director will be nicer, and promote you. You deserve a promotion!

I would have gone to talk to her too, if I were you. after all, U made a choice to come to this place instead of Allegh. for a reason. The way u talk of her, I bet she will be try to be helpful and make her best to give you some reassurance ;) Wish u good luck . . .

hell yeah it makes sense! "reassurance of the written kind in my file" (like a letter of reference) is a good and professional thing to get since she would be a great reference if you decide you can't deal with the new director

i agree with motormouth, maybe the new director will be even better - you definitely deserve to get paid more :P

wow - i haven't hear "fuck me running" in ages.. thanks for the memory :)

Those leeches are haunting you! Just hope that they don't get close enough to fuck you running! :-)

I'm sure it will all work out well in the end!

The first thing you need is to get settled and secure it what you're doing and when you're doing it. If that involves getting the post-director situation sorted now then I see that as sensible. It's how you get on with others there once settled in that counts !

I'm wondering if you can buy cuddly leech toys cos it would be humourous for you to have one !

Anne - Are you saying I shouldn't squash them like little bugs? (gasp!) She's very approachable so I'm sure she'll listen.

John - Just from our initial conversation I think she sees it that way. She really puts herself on the line for her employees so I am confident that she will do whatever is within her power. She's a real powerhouse for only being maybe all of 5 feet tall! =)

Terri - I'm asking, hopefully I'll like what I hear. If not, well - things change and that's the way it is. It's nothing personal, you know. Of course I say that now but give me another mood swing and I'll be crying or threatening someone...lol. Oh, Terri... I'm going to post a picture of my deadly keychain within the next few days just for you! You tell me how the thuglets will like THAT combined with my cheerful (cough) demeanor! =)

Stacy - Isn't that one of the best phrases?! It just makes me laugh and always catches people off guard! I can definitely imagine you using it... frequently! =) Just like you, I'm all about the CYA thing; can't be too careful.

Motor - If I print out your comment and take it to the new director, maybe they will take a promotion into consideration! =) And you are right... the person coming in might be wonderful. Or even 'ok'... ok is good, too. Just the surprise of it that threw me for a loop.

Tigress - Thanks! I have enough belief in her to do everything she can. She did ask me if I'd consider going there if I could get the hours and money I want. Oh boy. I'll just take it one step at a time otherwise I'll trip over everything! =)

Mysfit - I've learned the hard way (as most have) that words are nothing when it comes to agreements in many cases. When I first accepted the position I had her document my hours and salary and send it to me in an email, so she knows that's how I am. Life is full of changes and I hope this is a good one, no matter which way things fall. As for the saying, I don't even remember where I heard it but I love the fact that it catches people off guard. For some reason I reaaally like to do that...lol. (I mean catch people off guard, not get fucked running...) =)

Nomad - Lol... that would be something I'd never forget!!! And you know, once they latch on to you... Although I am pretty sure I can outrun them! =)

Carpy - Yep, that's what it all comes down to; getting settled and becoming comfortable. And, are you implying that I have to actually get along with these people? Ugh; you have such high standards. =) 'Cuddly leech toy' is most likely a phrase that has never once been uttered! Hey... I know someone who has a 'slug' pen, so perhaps there's hop!

You are right about needing some assuances and I would do exactly what you intend to do.
You have come too far and have made to many sacrifices for you not to know where you stand or what may happen in the forseeable future.
Good Luck and here's hoping 2006 will be a good one!

Chitty! - Nice to see you mister! I feel pretty much the way your comment reads so it'll be brought up and discussed. Then we'll see where it all goes. Hope things are going well for you and that your year started off on a high note! =)
